Getting started
What is the difference between a template and a list?
The template is the trip you take again and again: the cabin, the mountains, the summer holiday. A list is one particular trip, made from the template. Changing the list leaves the template alone. When you close the trip, you choose what goes back into the template.
Do I need a password?
No. You sign in with a link by e-mail, or with Google. No password to forget.
Packing
What do «Gather» and «Pack» mean?
You don't have to use it. Many people just tick things off when they're packed, and that is enough. If you also want to keep track of what you've found and laid out, you can use two phases: first «Gather», then «Pack». You switch phase at the top of the list.
If you'd rather do both with the same circle, choose «Tap twice» under Packing preferences. The first tap is laid out and the second is packed.
Does everyone see what I've checked?
Yes, anyone you have shared the list with. A check counts for the whole list, not just for you. «The medicine is packed» is a fact about the trip. Everyone with the list open sees it straight away.
What happens when the trip is over?
Close the trip and the list moves to the Logbook. Kitfolio asks about template items that weren't packed, things you added and packed along the way, and quantities that changed. This is optional. The answers can go straight into the template. The next trip starts a little wiser.
What is the shopping list?
Whatever you mark «Needs buying» is collected in the shopping list. In the shop you mark it bought. Buying isn't packing, so you check it off in the packing list once it's in the bag.
Offline
Does Kitfolio work offline?
Yes, with one caveat: Kitfolio keeps working in the list you have open. You can check off, add and edit. Changes are stored on the device and sent when you're back online.
Lists you've opened online before can also be opened from scratch without a signal. The Logbook and sharing need a connection.
What if someone else changed the same thing while I was offline?
Then Kitfolio asks you. You choose «Use mine» or «Keep theirs». Whoever chooses last wins. Nothing is overwritten unless someone has chosen it.
What does «waiting» mean?
The change is saved on the device but not sent yet. It goes by itself once you're back online. If it says «Couldn't send», tap «Try again».
If something is waiting for you, someone else changed the same thing. Choose «Use mine» or «Keep theirs» in the list, and the rest is sent. If you both choose «Use mine», the one who chooses last wins.
Can I change a trip that's been closed?
No. A closed trip lives in the Logbook, where you can read it. The owner can reopen it from there.
If the trip was closed while you were offline, the changes you made aren't saved. Kitfolio shows you which ones.
What happens to unsent changes if I sign out?
They live only on the device until they're sent. Sign out before that and they're deleted. Kitfolio tells you first and lets you send them.
Sharing
How do I share a list?
Open the list and choose Share. You can invite by e-mail or copy an invitation. Whoever you invite can start packing right away, with or without an account.
Who can do what?
Owner: whoever made the list. The owner can do everything, and is the only one who can remove people and grant the access «Can edit everything».
Can edit everything: changes anything in the list and can invite others.
Can pack: checks off, lays out and adds. Changes and deletes only what they added themselves.
How does an invitation link work?
Anyone with the link can join and pack. The link lasts 30 days. You can withdraw it under Share at any time, and then it stops working.
What can a guest do?
A guest can pack: check off, lay out and add. A guest can't change or delete what others added.
Guest access lasts until the date shown at the top of the list, or until the owner removes it, and works in the browser where the invitation was opened. If the guest creates an account, the list and what they added come along.
How do I remove someone from the list?
The owner opens Share and removes them. They lose access to the list. Only the owner can invite them back.
Free for good
What does Kitfolio cost?
Nothing. You can't pay for Kitfolio today. Lists, templates, sharing and packing offline are free.
There are limits on how much you can have at once, such as the number of active lists. When you reach one, Kitfolio tells you.
Is the home emergency kit list always free?
Yes. One active list made from the home emergency kit template never counts towards the limit on active lists. It is always free.
Your data
Which e-mails will I get?
The list's owner gets two e-mails per trip. The evening before the trip starts, one about what's left, if anything is. The day after the trip, one reminding you to close it, if the list is still open. Turn either off with the link in the e-mail or under Packing preferences.
Otherwise you only get e-mail you ask for: sign-in links and invitations.
Who sees my lists, and can I take them with me?
Only you, the people you've invited, and anyone holding an invitation link you made. You can download all your data under Account, and delete the account there.
How do I download my data?
Choose «Download my data» on the Account page. You get everything in one file. You can download once a day.
What happens when I delete my account?
You delete the account on the Account page. What is deleted, and when, is in the privacy notice.
